for those of you who don't know, BOTI is one of my favourite comics books ever since i was in...god....elementary school? o_O; samura's art has always inspired me and blown me away. if you've never read this comic, i suggest you pick it up.
this is my first time making a stamp so please don't laugh at my horrible attempt XD here is the original art i drew for it [link] so if anyone wants to make a better one then that'd be awesome
feel free to use it in your journals!
and just so everyone knows about the symbol, i'm gunna take an explanation straight out of the book because they explain it way better than i could: The main character in Blade of the Immortal, Manji, has taken the "crux gammata" as both his name and his personal symbol. This symbol is also known as the swastika, a name derived from the Sanskrit svastika (meaning "welfare," from su - "well" +asti - "he is"). As a symbol of prosperity and good fortune, the swastika was widely used throughout the ancient world (for example, appearing often in Mesopotamian coinage), including North and South America and has been used in Japan as a symbol of Buddhism since ancient times. To be precise, the symbol generally used by Japanese Buddhists is the sauvastika, which moves in a counterclockwise direction, and is called manji in Japanese. The arms of the swastika, which point in a clockwise direction, are generally considered a solar symbol. It was this version (the hakenkreuz) that was perverted by the Nazis. The sauvastika generally stands for night and often for magical practices. It is important that readers [or in this case, watchers!] understand the the swastika has ancient and honorable origins, and it is those that apply to this story [deviation], which takes place in the 18th century [ca. 1782-3]. There is no anti-Semitic or pro-Nazi meaning behind the use of the symbol in this story. Those meanings did not exist until 1910. NOW BE LEARN'D
NO. IT'S. NOT. Yes, it was used by the Nazi's, but the symbol in the story that this stamp was based upon was meant as we Buddhists meant it to be: PEACE AND PROSPERITY. And also, the symbol in the stamp is COUNTER-CLOCKWISE. The Nazi's symbol is CLOCKWISE. SO ACTUALLY READ THE DARN DISCRIPTIONS BEFORE YOU PROJECT YOURSELF AS STUPID.
Great stamp. A note on the symbol. My roommate's family is from India and they use a very similar symbol, some would argue the same. It is used to symbolize the unity of the gods and goddess they have. It is turned a little from the Nazi corrupted form of it and it has several dots but you would not believe the flack they get for it. They put it on new homes and cars for religious reasons and someone put graffiti on their car and accused them of being racists.
Really interest in this manga now. Wonder if our local Barnes and Nobel has it?
Maybe something aditional to the swastika, no idea if it's been mentioned yet, but the one you used is turned to the left, the nazi symbol was turned to the right, because hitler believed it looked more aggressive that way, and because of the direction "right" in political manners. Which is also why nazis used to raise the right arm and not just any arm like i've seen pseudo neonazis in america do it.
It's nice that the information behind the symbol is more widely spread, it would be nice to second guess the swastika when you see it but nearly everytime I see it's being used a Nazi supporter :/ It was found that the image was carved in to one of the seats at a church Hitler went to when he was younger (as I remember it) so he pretty much saw the image and decided to use it later in life. Wonder if he had any idea about what it meant...
I've never heared of this comic but it sounds interesting -goes to research-
Yup D:
